‘No One Will Read My Script! Access & Getting Past Industry Gatekeeping

All About Industry Access

Let’s talk about the elephant in the writers’ room: access. Or rather, the lack of it. Every single time I work with writers  – whether they’re total beginners or seasoned creatives trying to level up – these familiar laments come up:

  • “I don’t have access to industry professionals.”
  • “No one will respond to my queries.”
  • “I don’t know what to do with a finished script.”

Sound familiar? Let’s break it down. Because yes, gatekeeping is real, but it’s also beatable. And you don’t need to be “in the club” to make progress. Let’s go …

1) The Truth About Gatekeeping

Let’s be blunt: the film and TV world is full of cliques. There’s nepotism. There’s elitism. People do get opportunities because of who they know.

But here’s what’s also true: if you’re good, consistent, and strategic, you can build access. Slowly, yes. But definitely.

Know this: the gate is REAL … but it’s not locked.

2) Why You’re Not Hearing Back

If people aren’t replying to your emails or DMs, it’s usually for one of these reasons:

  • You’re pitching cold with no context or connection
  • Your message is too long, too vague, or too “me, me, me”
  • You’re asking too much, too soon
  • You’re not offering value or showing that you understand their role

This is not about being “not good enough” – it’s about strategy and empathy.

Want someone to read your work? Start by building a relationship, not sending a ten-page attachment to someone who didn’t ask for it.

3) The Relationship-First Rule

The industry is built on relationships. Not fake networking. Real ones. That means:

  • Follow people doing what you want to do
  • Share their work. Engage. Ask thoughtful questions
  • Be a human being, not a desperate sales pitch
  • Show up BEFORE you ask for anything

You don’t need a famous uncle. You need to become known and trusted in your niche — even just a little.

4) No Agent? No Problem (Really!)

You do not need an agent or a producer to get read. Try this instead:

  • Enter selected competitions and labs (not all are worth it, but many are)
  • Make a short film — it opens more doors than a dozen cold emails
  • Connect with the writing community online. Writers talk. And they refer
  • Take part in courses or mentoring schemes — many offer bursaries or payment plans
  • Build a peer network of writers and trade reads

You are not shouting into a void. You’re building a path. One contact, one script, one “yes” at a time.

5) When You Think “What’s the Point?”

If you’ve ever thought:

  • “I don’t know what to do with a finished script.”
  • “No one will ever read this.”
  • “What’s the point if I don’t have connections?”

Then you’re not alone. But here’s what I tell Bang2writers:

You are already doing more than 90% of people who say they want to write. You’re building the work and the mindset that creates opportunity. No one can stop you from improving. Literally no one can stop you from writing.

And in time, the right person will say yes — but only if you keep showing up.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to break in. You build your way in. One contact, script, relationship at a time.

Stop waiting to be invited. Start showing up as if you already belong – because you do.
