This post was brought to you via AI!!! So I asked my AI software to write a paragraph on why writers are so often freaked out by AI and got this ... 'Writers are often intimidated by the thought of an AI taking over their roles. The idea that AI can automatically generate content without any human input or intervention can be frightening. However, while AI is becoming increasingly sophisticated and able to replicate certain types of writing tasks such as summarization and data analysis, it still cannot replace the creativity, creativity, and nuance that a human writer can bring. AI can be a useful tool in streamlining certain processes, but should not be seen as a replacement for human writers.'Kinda ironic it repeats 'creativity'!!! But most of us believe in the 'writer's voice' - the notion of *a writer's personality on the page*. Every writer brings their own unique set of insights, lived experiences, background etc to a story. So even if two writers are given IDENTICAL concepts, characters and plot beats to hit, they will STILL create two very, very different stories. We are unique. AI is not. It is a reflection of who we are, not the start. This doesn't mean AI isn't without its challenges. Recently we've seen on social media that certain contests have closed their doors due to 'floods of entries' apparently generated by AI. (Though HOW did the organisers tell if AI is apparently so good and able to replace us??). I can ALSO see unscrupulous publishers or producers generating 'first drafts' via AI to justify paying us even less to rewrite them because we didn't do the hard work of breaking story. (However, that kind of shit has been going on for decades already - just the delivery has changed).Every time new tech emerges, people freak out. This is natural.
